汉英语言对比（7）
词义相异有两种情况。
第一种情况是指称意义相符，蕴涵意义相异。汉语有些词所含的文化信息丰富多彩，体现汉民族的特色。如：松、梅、竹在汉文化中称为“岁寒三友”，人们赞誉它们不畏严寒，傲然风雪的品德，然而 pine trees、plum blossoms 和 bamboo 却不能引起英美人这样的联想，也就是说，这三个词在英语中不具备松、梅、竹在汉文化中的蕴涵意义。
又如“羊”在古汉语中就是吉祥的意思。中国古人认为羊是温驯、祥和、美好的兽类，因此，用羊合成的汉字多为褒义。例如：美、羞、鲜、義(义)等。以“羊”为中心的词语“三羊开泰”(Three Rams Bring Bliss) 常用来表示人们希求开年大吉的心愿。 ram 在英语中除了表示“公羊”，还表示“撞击装置”。 ram 一词不具备“羊”在汉文化中的蕴涵意义。
第二种情况是指称意义和蕴涵意义相异。
“龙”是“我国古代传说中的神异动物，身体长，有鳞，有角，能走，能飞;能游泳，能兴云降雨。”“龙”还是“封建时代帝王的象征”。(《现汉》)“龙”已被视为中国最大的神物，最大的吉祥物，成为中华民族永远的图腾。 dragon 在英语中也是人们想像中的动物，但它“有翅膀和爪子，能喷火”(imaginary animal with wings and claws, able to breathe out fire DALED)。 dragon 和龙不仅形态不同，蕴涵意义也不同。它与帝王毫无关系，而且常用作贬义，形容凶悍强暴的人，尤指悍妇或母夜叉 (fierce person, esp a woman OALED)。“凤”是“凤凰”，是“古代传说中的百鸟之王，羽毛美丽，雄的叫凤，雌的叫凰。常用来象征祥瑞。”(《现汉》) phoenix 在英语中也是神话中的鸟，但它是“长生鸟”(mythical bird of the Arabian desert, said to live for several hundred years before burning itself and then rising born again from its ashes OALED)，指称意义和蕴涵意义均与“凤凰”不同。
由于龙和凤在中国文化中是瑞禽仁兽，龙凤组成的图案多用于吉祥喜庆的场合。“龙凤呈祥”(Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Prosperity) 常用来表示对新婚夫妇的美好祝愿。初次见到这一英译文的英美读者，也许会感到文化休克 (culture shock)。但愿通过汉外文化的交流，多读汉英翻译的作品后，他们会逐渐熟悉中国文化，逐渐接受英译文及其反映的中国文化。
三、词义空缺 (semantic zero)
不言而喻，词语意义的空缺是文化现象空缺的结果。表示独特文化的词语在另一种语言中必然没有与之对应的词语，造成零指称意义或零蕴涵意义的现象。翻译时需要用音译、意译或其他方式表示其义。
