First: According to magnitude I divide the whalesinto three primary BOOKS (subdivisible intoCHAPTERS), and these shall comprehend them all,both small and large.

第一　我按照大小,把鲸分为主要的三篇(各篇再分为章),这就把它们不论大小都包括在内了。

As the type of the FOLIO I present the SpermWhale; of the OCTAVO, the Grampus; of theDUODECIMO, the Porpoise.

我以抹香鲸,逆戟鲸,小鲸分别作为对开型,八开型,十二开型的代表。

第一篇(对开型)　第一章(抹香鲸)...这种鲸,就是古代英国含糊地称之为喇叭鲸,

and the Anvil Headed whale, is the present Cachalot of the French, and the Pottsfich of theGermans, and the Macrocephalus of the Long Words.

真甲鲸和砧头鲸的鲸,也就是现代法国称为"卡沙洛"。德国称为"波茨鱼"(都是按照法德两国对于鲸的称法的音译。)和那个字音累赘的学名:疣猪属鲸。
