　　William McKinley, Jr. was the 25th President of theUnited States, serving between 1897 and 1901. Hewas born in 1843 in Ohio. McKinley briefly attendedAllegheny College, and was teaching in a countryschool when the Civil War broke out. He enlisted as aprivate in the Union Army. After the war he studiedlaw and opened his own office. He married IdaSaxton, the daughter of a local banker.

He was the last president to havefought in the American Civil War and was succeeded by his vice president Theodore Roosevelt.
