The double life of Alfred Bloggs

These days, people who do manual work often receive far more money than people who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently referred to as' white collar workers' for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work. Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation. When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job.

1.These days, people who do manual work often receive far more money than people who work in offices.

  manual ['mænjuəl]

  adj.

  Manual Install and Upgrade.

  语言点1:句子结构分析:far more money than…

  These days 如今;at present 目前;at the present time 目前;currently 当今;nowadays 目前;for the moment目前;for the time being 时下;presently 时下。

2.People who work in offices are frequently referred to as'white collar workers' for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work

  frequently ['fri:kwəntli]

  adv.

  Do you complain frequently?

  collar ['kɔlə]

She collared my black wool coat with otter pelts.

3.Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers.

  willing ['wiliŋ]

  adj.

A person willing to wait, Another person to appear.

  sacrifice ['sækrifais]

to sacrifice one's house for needs

  privilege ['privilidʒ]

  to privilege legislators from arrest

Such is human nature that everybody tries to earn more and work less.

Such is human nature that young people are often willing to run after their idols.

4.This can give rise to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation.

  curious ['kjuəriəs]

  adj.

  1. He has a curious look.

  dustman ['dʌstmən]

(He)spent the next eight hours as a dustman.

为了避免重复,did用来替代give rise to curious situations。

Such conduct might give rise to misunderstanding.

5.When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job.

  embarrassed [im'bærəst]

  adj.

I embarrassed myself the entire evening.

Too…to…

  语言点2:too…to…

One is never too old to learn.

This question is not too difficult for him to answer.
