A:Can you speak Japanese?

B:Yes,I can,but not very well.

A:Where did you learn it?

B:At school.And I'm still learning it now.

A:How long have you been learning it?

你学了多久了?

B:About three years.

A:Can you speak any other languages?

B:I'm afraid not.

How do you learn English? Or French, Russian,German,Chinese or any other languages? Most people go to classes regularly, and study at home with a book.But the problem for adult learners is that they are busy people who find it hard to come to classes at a fixed time.They miss a few classes and then decide that they have fallen too far behind the other students.Eventually they drop out of the class altogether.

你是如何学英语的?后者是法语、俄语、德语、中文或其它语言?很多人定期去上课，在即那本说学。但是成年学者的问题在于他们是大忙人，觉得很难找个固定的时间去上课。他们错过了一些课程，然后认为他们落后其他学生很多。最后，他们全都辍学了。

There are various resources available which the students can use alone or in a small group.There's a language laboratory; there are microcomputers with games and other programs designed for language learning.There are video-cassettes which teach students about the life and language of a country.

单独的学生或一个小组的学生有各种各样的资料可以使用。有语言实验室，有带游戏和其它为语言学习的程序的微型计算机。有盒式录像带可以教学生一个国家的生活和语言。

A:I give up! I simply can't learn French!

B:Why do you say that? I think you're making a lot of progress.

A:No, I'm not.I try and try and I still can't speak it very well.

B:Learning any language takes a lot of effort.But don't give up.Why don't we practise those dialogues together?

A:Does she make any sense to you?

你听懂她的意思吗?

B:No.It's all Greek to me.

A:She's speaking French, not Greek.

B:I know that.I mean I couldn't understand her at all.

A:Me neither.All I have to do is study French hard.

B:Yeah,this is my first visit here.

A:You speak good English,though.

B:Thanks,but I speak English with a strong German accent.

A:But let me tell you,you're doing just fine.I couldn't do half as well as you do when I was learning German.By the way,how long have you been learning English?

Do you know how many languages there are in the world?There are about one thousand and five hundred,but many of them are not very important.English is one of the most important languages because so many people use it, not only in England and America,but in other countries of the world.

你知道世界上有多少种语言吗?大概有1500多种，但是它们中的很多都不是很重要。英语是最重要的语言之一，因为很多人使用它，不仅是在英美，还在世界其它国家。

Many English children study French.French is also a very important language.Some children study German, Russian,Japanese and Chinese.

很多说英语的儿童学法语。法语也是非常重要的一门语言。一些孩子学德语、俄语、日语和汉语。

Which is the best way to learn a language? We know that we all learnt our own language well when we were children.We can learn a second language in the same way, it won't seem so difficult. How does a child do? He or she listens to what people say and tries to guess what he or she hears.When he or she wants something, he or she has to ask for it.He or she is using the language, thinking in it and talking in it all the time.If people use a second language all the time, they will learn it quickly.

学习一门语言的最佳方法是哪种?我们知道，我们小时候都把母语学得很好。我们可以用同样的方法学第二语言，这似乎不会很难。孩子是怎么学的呢?他/她听人们说的，然后试着猜他/她听到的内容。当他/她想要一些东西时，他/她不得不请求得到它。他/她一直都在使用那门语言，用那门语言思考，用那门语言交谈。如果人们一直都使用第二语言，他们会学得很快。
