Turkey has described the shooting down by Syria of a Turkish reconnaissance jet as a hostile act of the highest order, but said that it would not go to war over it. Turkey has requested a meeting of Nato members on Tuesday to discuss its response. Jonathan Head reports from Istanbul.
The Turkish government has been holding an emergency cabinet meeting to decide what its response should be to the shooting down of one of its aircraft by Syria on Friday. Coming out of that meeting, though, the signal from Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc was that any response would be limited. We will not go to war, he said, despite the fact that Turkey insists the F-4 reconnaissance plane was in international airspace when it was hit without warning, and that Syria must have known it was a Turkish jet. He also revealed that Syria forces fired on a Turkish rescue plane that went to search for the missing crew members.
Cyprus is to ask the European Union for a financial bailout. The government in Nicosia said the island's banks were suffering from exposure to debt-laden Greece. The second largest bank in Cyprus is thought to be in need of urgent support. Cyprus becomes the fifth country in the eurozone to seek a bailout after the Irish Republic, Portugal, Greece and Spain.
The newly appointed finance minister of Greece, Vassilis Rapanos, has resigned. Mr Rapanos was admitted to hospital last week suffering abdominal pain and dizziness shortly after being appointed to the job. Mark Lowen reports from Athens.
In his resignation letter to the prime minister, Vassilis Rapanos said he was stepping down due to ill health. He'd been hospitalized over the weekend after apparently fainting. But there is speculation that he was unhappy with the makeup of the cabinet, and that other reasons may lie behind that decision. It spells more yet more turbulence for the new government after the prime minister himself was admitted to hospital for an eye operation, forcing Greece's international lenders to delay their visit to Athens originally planned for today. Several names have now been touted as Mr Rapanos's replacement, including the former Prime Minister Lucas Papademos.
The United States Supreme Court has upheld a key part of Arizona's immigration law, which allows state police to stop and check the identity of anyone who might be in the country illegally. President Barack Obama said he was concerned about the practical impact of the law, which gives police the right to demand proof of US citizenship from suspects even without probable cause. Arizona's Governor Jan Brewer welcomed the ruling.
"Arizona did not ask for this fight, nor did it seek out the task of having to confront illegal immigration. We cannot forget that we are here today because of federal government has failed the American people regarding immigration policy. So today is a day when the key components of our efforts to protect the citizens of Arizona, has unanimously been vindicated by the highest court in the land."

Bolivian police officers who are on strike over low pay have clashed with supporters of the president Evo Morales in Bolivia's main city La Paz. About 500 government supporters marched to the city's main square where twice as many police had rallied to demand a salary increase. The officers used tear gas to drive back the government supporters.
Three policemen have been shot dead at Mexico City's international airport. Police said the officers had been sent to detain suspects in a drug-trafficking case. Travellers dived for cover when the suspects opened fire, killing two officers; a third died in hospital. The suspects got away.
The Ugandan Red Cross fears that many people may have died in a landslide in the east of the country. At least 15 homes were buried in the area near Mount Elgon National Park. Gabriel Gatehouse reports.
The landslide started in the early afternoon after days of heavy rainfall. Houses in at least two villages are reported to have been swept under a torrent of mud. The Red Cross said its workers had managed to pull a number of people to safety, but that many more were feared buried. This is an area prone to landslides – partly due to deforestation on the coffee-producing slopes of Mount Elgon. In 2010, thousands of people were forced to flee their homes after a mudslide killed more than 350 people.
A major fire has destroyed a 200-year-old Sufi shrine in the capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, Srinagar. Witnesses said the blaze started from the roof and quickly engulfed the three-story wooden structure. Kashmiri Muslim groups accused Indian authorities of negligence.
And in Tennis, the five times Wimbledon champion Venus Williams has lost her first round match and is out of the competition. It's the first time the American has lost in the opening round since her debut at Wimbledon 15 years ago. The men's world No 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia began the defense of his title by beating Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero.
