二、连接名词性从句的从属连词

1.that

（1）不充当句子成分，没有词义，在句中只起连接作用。

He replied that he was going by train.

他回答说他将坐火车去。（that引导宾语从句）

That Jane let out the news annoyed all of us.

简泄漏消息的事使我们都不高兴。（that引导主语从句）

（2）that引导宾语从句时常常省略。

I don’t think （that）he will come.我想他不会来。

（3）that引导主语从句、表语从句、同位语从句时不可省略。

It’s clear that they badly need help.很明显，他们急需援助。

The reason is that he has not passed the exam.原因是他考试没有及格。

The difficulty lies in the fact that we are short of money.困难在于我们缺乏资金。

2.if，whether

（1）引导宾语从句表示“是否”时，两者常可互换。

He asked if/whether we wanted a drink.他问我们是否想喝一杯。

He didn’t tell me if/whether he would come.他没有告诉我他是否会来。

（2）引导主语从句、表语从句、同位语从句时，用whether不用if。

Whether it is true remains a question.那是不是真的还是个问题。（主语从句）

The question is whether it is true.问题是那是不是真的。（表语从句）

We have a doubt whether it is true.我们怀疑那是不是真的。（同位语从句）

【提示】 引导主语从句放在主句之后时可用if来代替。

It is unclear whether/if he likes the present.他是不是喜欢那个礼物还不清楚。

（3）在动词不定式之前时用whether不用if。

I’m not sure whether to stay or leave.我不知是留还是去。

I didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry.我真是哭笑不得。

（4）用whether ...or not连接让步状语从句，或与 or 连用连接两个从句时，用whether。

Whether he agrees or not，I shall do that.不管他同意与否，我都要那样做。

I will write to you whether or not I can come.我能不能来，我将写信告诉你。

I don’t know whether he is wrong or she is wrong.我不知道是他错了，还是她错了。

（5）用于介词之后时，用whether不用if。

It depends on whether the letter arrives in time.这取决于信是否来得及时。

I worry about whether I hurt her feelings.我担心是否伤了她的感情。

（6）if表示“是否”在句中可能产生歧义时，用whether不用if。
