（1）that连接

【例1】 　 That he survived the earthquake is a miracle.

【译文】 　他在地震中幸免于难，这是个奇迹。

【例2】 　 That he will go abroad to take advanced study seems unlikely.

【译文】 　他要出国深造似乎不大可能。

【例3】 　 That Bill divorced Juliet is not surprising.

【译文】 　Bill和Juliet离婚并不令人惊讶。

【例4】 　 Whether he agrees to the plan or not makes no difference.

【译文】 　他同意不同意此计划无所谓。

此处的连接词that/whether没有词义，在从句中不作任何语法成分，只起引导主语从句的作用，且不可省略。

【例1】 　 What he said on that occasion greatly shocked me.

【例2】 　 Whatever is worth doing should be done well.
