ON THE WAY TO JOB INTERVIEWS

Dear Debby, you let the world know that kind people still exist.

I was on my way to two job interviews. Not surprisingly, I was nervous, so before getting off the train, I took my phone out of my bag, making sure the address was right. A short walk later, I reached the subway, but when I went to get money for my ticket, I found that my wallet was gone. Suddenly I realized that I might have lost it when I phoned on the train.

I ran back to the information counter of the train station and asked the conductor if anyone had found my wallet. The answer was no. I was disappointed. At this time, a woman told me that the train had not left yet. Her name was Debby, and she was a shopkeeper in the train station. I hurried to see if they had found my wallet. Unluckily, it seemed that someone had taken it.

I returned to the information counter heartbroken. Not only would I miss the two interviews, but I was trapped into the embarrassing situation of having no money. I burst into tears as I explained my situation to Debby. To my surprise, she reached into her bag and handed me $7. “It’s all I have right now,” she said, “Use it to get to your interviews.” After I finished my two interviews with the $7, I came back to thank her, but she was gone.

I was deeply moved by the woman’s kindness. And just when my day couldn’t get worse, I received a call. It seemed that a conductor had found my wallet and would meet me on the train the next day.

I just want to share that kindness can happen when we least expect it. When it happens, we should pay it forward.
