I Wash My Tablecloth in a Neighboring Stream

Disclaiming wishes for a gala funeral,

Chuangtzu said, “I have heaven and earth for coffins.”

For mine, coming when it must, and will,

I’m less ambitious: a shroud will do.

Why annoy the feeding flies with more than that?

Too late, mourning, to summon ten white cranes.

Some will not serve corruption, and they starve:

How else do you know to make death a joy?

(Peter Stambler 译)

When Chuang-tzu spoke of his funeral affairs,

[He said,] “Heaven and Earth will be my coffins.”

My return—this has its set time,

And all you’ll need is one bamboo screen.

When I’m dead I’ll feed the bluebottle flies;

For mourning—non need to trouble white cranes.

Starving to death on Mt. Shou-yang;

If your life has been incorrupt, then death is also a joy.

(Robert. G. Henricks 译)

Chuang-tzu said for his funeral

let Heaven and Earth be my coffins

whenever I reach that state

all I need is a shroud

let my body feed flies

don’t bother asking the cranes to mourn

I’d rather starve on Shouyang Mountain

for those who live honest death is fine too

(Red Pine 译)
