 Bastard 私生子，不齿之徒，王八蛋，狗东西，无情又自私的人；讨厌的，麻烦而费劲的工作；令人不快的意外事件

old bastard 对熟人(限男性)的承认、赞成、认可

rotten bastard 老哥，臭王八蛋

poor bastard 生活艰苦或运气欠佳者，可怜的家伙

 bastard 杂凑的，类似而变型的，代表性不强的，赝造的，等同的

 bastardly 卑劣的，满怀恶意的

 bastardize 贬抑，贬抑而使变质

 like a bastard(强化比喻)

Bastard 长久以来是英文中骂人最毒的字眼，唯近年来，由于某些更毒的黄色字眼兴起，bastard 也相形见绌。Bastard 当“下贱，卑鄙”解时，随 rotten，fucking，stupid 后强化语气；但作男性熟人的“称呼”解时，除非是老友或有深交，否则忌用；当“艰困的人”解时，常以 poor，wretched 形容之，以表怜悯，且无骂人之意。其合成语示强化作用时，与 bitch 的语意等同。Bastardly 是形容词，不是副词； bastardize 当及物动词。Bastard 在艺术及科技界，有“杂种，劣等，畸形异状”等意思，也无骂人之意；除特殊情况外，在一般场所应忌用此字，淑女尤然。

Bastard 用以——骂人，咒事

1. bastard 卑鄙，下贱

A. Everybody sucks，but so do I1，so where does that leave things2? Hearing myself sound off3 like a bratty little bastard makes me ill…

每一个人都讨厌，我也是，那又能怎样呢?听自己像个乳臭未干的小兔崽子高声嚷嚷，不禁恶心。

注：

1. 本文是该校学生投稿抱怨令人郁闷的冬季气候。

2. so where does that leave things? 是反问句，表示“无奈”。

3. sound off (对某事)高声表态。通常后跟 about的介词短语，如“sound off about raising taxes”(高声反对增税)。在hear或see等及物动词的宾语后，其补语为不定词时省去“to”。本句是用动名词短语当主语。

A. Victims’ families1 often spend a lot of energy on retribution，says Victor Streib，a Cleveland State University2 law professor. At the time of execution，they often feel a surge of adrenaline3，like， yeah4，that bastard got what he deserved.

注：

1. Victims’ families 受害者家属。

2. Cleveland State University 1964年设立，学生多为上班族学生 (commuter students)。

3. surge of adrenaline 竞争激烈时肾上腺素通常上涌，使体能扬升，令人慷慨激昂。

4. yeah… yes的口语化。

A. If you print that，you bastard，I’ll sue you for defamation of character.

王八蛋!你要是报导那些，我就要告你损害名誉!

B. But it’s what you said.

那可是你自己说的喔!

A. When you couldn’t collect on the debt，you had the audacity to kill them. You’re in hot water,big time1. You know that，don’t you?

你讨债未果，竟敢杀人。你闯了大祸，知道吗?

B. So I knocked some people off.2 Big deal.3 Don’t forget，you were there with me. And you left fingerprints everywhere. Who’s to know if I did it or you did it?

杀人又怎么样?别忘了，你也在现场，到处都有你的指纹。是我杀的，还是你杀的，谁知道?

A. You bastard! It was you! You killed all three in that family yourself I had nothing to do with it.

你这个狗东西!是你杀的，一家三口全是你一个人干的，我根本没插手。

注：

1. in hot water，big time 惹的麻烦可大哩! big time是加强语气，有“大大地”之意。

2. knock off (a)仿造，如工业产品，所仿造的产品；(b)做完(工作、文件、报告)，喝完(啤酒)；(c)杀害；(d)下班(What time do you knock off?)。另有 knock it off(少啰嗦)，意义不同。

3. big deal 是讽刺性感叹词(ironic interjection)，作“有什么值得大惊小怪的?”，“那又怎么样?”，“有什么了不起?”解。

2. bastard 无情郎、自私鬼

A. He never loved his wife. When he died，he didn’t leave her a cent.

他从不爱他太太。他去世时，一分钱也没留给她。

B. He didn’t leave anything in his estate for his children either, the bastard.

那自私鬼的房地产，连子女也都没份哩。

3. bastard随rotten，fucking，slovenly等形容词后，用以加强语气

A. We’re in trouble now. Some guy squealed1 on us to the police.

糟了!有人密告了我们!

B. Rotten bastard! How did he find out?

臭王八蛋!他怎么发现的?

注：

1. squeal on us 借“squeal”(尖叫)当“报警”，“告密”解。

A. To the worthless，bumbling，incompetent，inhuman monsters of the MTA1：Leave Tony Avena2 alone，you arrogant，slovenly bastards. You continually，totally and completely disgust every citizen of this country.

注：

1. MTA Metropolitan Transit Authority 纽约市大众运输系统管理局的缩写。

2. Avena 81岁高龄鞋匠，自1922年以来，承租铁路桥下一窄小店面谋生，MTA突于1996年八月多次下令驱逐Avena，要收回该店面土地，致引起公愤。

4. bastard 讨厌的东西，困恼、麻烦的工作或差事

A. Be careful how you handle those barrels of toxic waste.

处理那些装有毒性废物的桶子要小心。

B. You drop those bastards，and we’re in big trouble.

那些讨厌东西一掉下来，我们麻烦可就大啦!

A. We really shouldn’t do this job without the proper tools.

缺少应有的工具，就不应该承包这个工程。

B. It’ll be a bastard of a job without them，that’s for sure1.

没有那些工具，工作一定会麻烦的。

注：

l…that’s for sure (口语)一定的。用来肯定前面或后面所说的话。

5. bastard 费劲的工作

A. Let’s stop here and take a break.

就在此刻停一停，休息一下吧!

B. This hill is a real bastard，isn’t it?

［爬］这个山坡可真费劲，不是吗?

6. bastard 使人不愉快的意外情况

A. I found out I owed more income taxes than I originally estimated.

我发现我欠的所得税比原来估计的要多。

B. Ain’t1 that a bastard!

多么令人不快啊!

注：

1. ain’t 教育程度低者用此字当 am not，are not，is not；have not，has not， do not， does not，did not，系非正式(non-standard)英文。在文章及演讲中，使用 ain’t 以加强语气或引起注意。以撰写通俗不拘礼的文章见称的美国记者及专栏作家亦时而用之。此外，也出现于通俗歌词及英文格言之中，如Ain’t she sweet?(她很甜，不是吗?)，又如 If it ain’t broke，don’t fix it. (没有坏掉的东西何必修理。)

Bastard，Bastards 当名词时——前加形容词poor，表示“怜悯”之意；加you (old)时，表达“善意”的戏谑

2. you old bastard 表达“善意”的戏谑

汤姆你这个老家伙，你还是老样子啊!

B. Only older and a lot grayer， that’s all!

只是年龄徒增，头发又白了许多罢了!

Bastard 当形容词时——后随名词，表示：“杂凑的，变型的，或代表性不足的”；“伪造的，次等的(inferior)，近似的(resembling to some degree)，有……模样的(having the appearance of)，杂种的(of questionable origin)，异常的性质、形状、比例或大小的”。(+ ly)表示“卑劣的，满怀恶意的”。

1. bastard 表示“杂凑的、变型的、伪造的”

A. A lot of bastard words appear in comic books.

漫画书中出现的英文杂凑单字很多。

B. It’s hard for me to learn them all.

对我来讲，就不容易全都记得。

A. What you’re looking at now is a bastard strain of the bacteria.

2. bastardly 卑劣的

监牢里发生的诸多卑劣行为，鲜为外人所知。

Bastard 当及物动词——加后缀“-ize”，表示“贬抑，使变质”

A. They bastardized the song，burned1 new CDs，attached new labels，and sold it underground2.

他们将歌词删改，灌新的光碟，贴上新标签，偷偷地卖。

B. The fine is stiff if they get caught.

万一被抓到，要受重罚。

注：

1. 灌唱片叫“cut a record”，灌光碟叫“burn a CD”。

2. underground 此字之形容词与副词同一拼法，此处为副词，作“秘密地，暗中地，偷偷地”解。

…like a bastard 强化“情况、事态”，有“真……”或“可……”之意，表达遗憾或无奈等负面心情。

A. It snowed like a bastard in the Midwest this winter.

今冬美中西部暴风雪可大哪!

B. We had a mild winter in New York.

我们在纽约却享受了个暖和的冬季。
