Talk with Billy

Mrs．Jones was waiting for an important telephone call．But she had no bread in the house，so she left the baby at home and said to his five-year-old brother，“I am going to the shops，Jimmy，and I will be back in a few minutes．”While she was out，the telephone rang，and Jimmy answered．

“Hello，”said a man，“is your mother there？”

“No，”answered Jimmy．

“Well，when she comes back，say to her，‘Mr．Baker telephoned’．”

“What？”

“Mr．Baker．Write it down．B-A-K-E-R．”

“How do you write a B？”

“How do I write...？Listen，little boy，is there anybody else with you？Any brothers or sisters？”

“My brother Billy is here．”

“Good．I want to talk to him，please．”

“All right．”Jimmy took the telephone to the baby’s bed and gave it to Billy．

When their mother came back，she asked，“Did anyone telephone？”

“Yes，”said Jimmy，“a man．But he only wanted to talk to Billy．”

琼斯夫人正在等一个重要电话，但家里没有面包了，所以只能出去一趟，把刚出世的孩子比利留在家里。她对五岁的大儿子说：“我要出去买东西，吉米，几分钟就回来。”她刚出去，电话铃就响了。吉米拿起听筒。

“你好，”电话那头的男子说，“你妈妈在吗？”

“不在。”吉米答道。

“那好，等她回来，告诉她‘贝克先生刚才来过电话’。”

“你说什么？”

“贝克先生。请你记下来。贝——克。”

“‘贝’字怎么写？”

“‘贝’字怎么写……？听着，小鬼，家里还有其他人吗？比如哥哥或姐姐？”

“我兄弟比利在旁边。”

“行，请让我和他通话。”

“好的。”吉米把电话拿到小弟弟比利的床边，让他听电话。

妈妈回来以后，问：“有人打电话来吗？”

“有。”吉米道，“是个男的，但他只想和比利通话。”
