印度尼西亚附近发生地震后发布海啸警报

A powerful earthquake has struck off the northeast coast of Indonesia's Sulawesi island, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning.

Indonesia's geophysics agency reported a 7.1 magnitude quake while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude at 6.9.

The USGS said the earthquake was centred 185km southeast of Manado at a depth of 24km.

A graphic posted on Twitter by Indonesia's geophysics agency predicted waves of half a metre for parts of North Sulawesi and North Maluku.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.

The quake caused panic in the city of Ternate in the Maluku island chain, where people ran to higher ground, a witness told The Associated Press.
