A fishing vessel has sunk in the Caribbean, killing 26 people.

The Captain Waly went down around 55kms off Cabo Gracias a Dios on the coast of Honduras, the country’s armed forces confirmed.

It is believed all the victims were fishing divers, but 47 people were rescued, reported the Honduran news website La Prensa.

The accident happened at 3.45pm local time (7.45am AEST).

The fishermen are believed to all be from Puerto Lempira, La Mosquitia.
