Donald Trump has floated the idea of arming US teachers, intensifying a fierce debate over how to prevent school shootings after last week’s massacre in Florida.

“Our schools are soft targets. We need to harden the targets so that the potential murderer knows that that is not going to happen. I think we need to get started right away,” the president said during an emotional listening session on Wednesday with survivors of the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland and the parents of children killed by gun violence.

In the Florida attack, 17 students and teachers were killed with an AR-15 assault rifle. Former pupil Nikolas Cruz has been charged with multiple counts of premeditated murder over the Valentine’s Day tragedy.

Mr Trump said that one possible solution would be to allow certain teachers and school staff to carry concealed weapons.

Mr Trump also suggested the administration could soon push to raise the age at which Americans are allowed to buy firearms, as well as institute tougher background checks before gun purchases can go through.

When Mr Trump asked how many of those attending the White House meeting approved of the idea of arming teachersseveral hands went up. However, a greater number were against.

For over an hour Mr Trump and vice-president Mike Pence heard the emotional outpourings from victims’ relatives and school friends who urged the administration to take immediate action to prevent any future mass shootings, which have become frequent in the US over the past decade.

The Parkland shooting has sparked a fierce debate around the country about gun control, mental health and school safety. Students at Stoneman Douglas have spoken passionately over the past few days about the need for “common sense” laws, particularly tougher background checks and raising the age to buy guns.

The students’ campaign appeared to have gained momentum on Tuesday after Mr Trump said he would ban devices that enable semi-automatic rifles to be fired faster. However, it faced a setback on Wednesday after members of Florida’s state legislature said they would not consider banning semi-automatic assault weapons like the one Nikolas Cruz had allegedly used.
