After visiting those wounded in the gun battle, Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s defence minister, said the weekend’s attack on the Sunjuwan military camp was carried out by militants from the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammad, with guidance and support from within Pakistan.

Islamabad has denied involvement with the militants that attacked the army camp, describing New Delhi’s allegations as a “smear campaign” and “the deliberate creation of war hysteria”.

In a statement, Islamabad urged the international community to press India to “refrain from any misadventure across the line of control”.

The rhetoric underlines the rising tensions between the neighbours, which have fought four wars — including one undeclared war — over the Kashmir Valley, the picturesque Muslim-majority area claimed by both the nuclear-armed neighbours.
