英仕曼集团将在中国推出量化对冲基金
英仕曼集团(Man Group)将在中国推出量化对冲基金，面向富有的中国投资者销售。这将使其成为首家在中国推出在岸对冲基金的外国投资公司。
The fund, to be managed by Man’s AHL quantitative trading unit in Shanghai, will trade using computer algorithms seeking to capitalise on market swings.

It will trade across liquid markets in China, focusing initially on listed futures including agricultural commodities, industrial commodities, bonds, metals, energy and stock indices.

The company, which manages $103.5bn of investor money, was one of the first global investment firms to be granted registration as a private securities investment fund manager, known as a PFM, that allows companies to develop onshore funds in China.

Hedge funds have made little inroads tapping into the Chinese high-net worth market, with most investment coming from the US, Europe and Middle East.

In addition to opening to outside investment funds, China is also easing its limits on foreign ownership of financial services groups following complaints that the restrictions block their development there.

China’s vice-minister of finance Zhu Guangyao said last month it would relax or eliminate ownership limits in commercial banking, securities, futures, asset management and insurance.

Mr Zhu said China would lift the cap on foreign equity stakes in securities, fund management and futures companies to 51 per cent from the current 49 per cent, and remove the cap entirely three years after the new limit takes effect.

Other finance groups besides Man Group are making inroads in China. UBS, the Swiss bank, was granted a PFM in July, while Fidelity, the passive investment manager, obtained one of the licenses in January.

Both companies have launched investment funds in China. UBS Asset Management established its first onshore equity fund last month, and Fidelity launched a bond fund in May.

The quant strategy the company is launching “leverages Man AHL’s 30 years of quantitative investing expertise, combining this with our local investment capabilities to serve the needs of Chinese investors”, she added.

Man Group is one of the largest active investment management groups that run hedge funds, and one of the few of its kind that are publicly traded.

Man Group was granted one of the first PFM licenses in China in September, although it has had a presence in the country since 2012. It was granted a quota to raise funds from qualified Chinese investors for overseas investment in 2013.

At the time the PFM was granted in September, chief executive Luke Ellis said it was “the next stage of Man Group’s long-term strategy to build our presence in the world’s second-largest economy”.
