南非总统挺过不信任投票

South African President Jacob Zuma narrowly won a motion of no-confidence on Tuesday, as MPs of the ruling African National Congress closed ranks to stave off the biggest threat to his scandal-prone presidency.

南非总统雅各布•祖玛(Jacob Zuma)周二以微弱优势击败不信任投票动议，执政的非洲人国民大会(African National Congress，简称非国大)的多数议员在关键时刻保持团结，化解了丑闻缠身的祖玛总统任期所面临的最大威胁。

ANC MPs defeated the opposition motion, which would have forced the resignation of Mr Zuma and his entire cabinet, by 198 votes to 177, with nine abstentions. But the fact that more than two dozen ANC lawmakers supported the no-confidence vote underlined how unpopular the president has become as he has faced a string of allegations of corruption and cronyism. The ANC has 249 seats in the 400-member parliament.

非国大议员以198票对177票(9票弃权)的投票结果击败了反对党提出的动议——该动议如果通过，将会迫使祖玛及其内阁全体辞职。但是超过24名非国大议员支持不信任投票，这个事实突显出，面对一连串腐败和任人唯亲指控的南非总统，已变得多么不受欢迎。在400名议员组成的议会中，非国大占有249个席位。

His survival will exacerbate tensions within the ANC, with many of its members torn between standing by a leader who has severely damaged the credibility of the party and supporting an opposition attempt to oust him. The result will also further tarnish the ANC’s standing in the eyes of South Africans who are fed up with government scandals and a stagnating economy.

祖玛挺过不信任投票，将加剧非国大党内的紧张，很多非国大成员左右为难——既不愿支持这位严重损害该党信誉的领导人，也不愿支持试图赶他下台的反对党。该结果还将进一步玷污非国大在南非人眼里的形象，他们对政府丑闻和经济停滞厌烦至极。

The rand fell by 1 per cent against the dollar after the result of the vote was announced.
