For Chinese people, Mid-Autumn Festival is considered an important holiday, just after the Lunar New Year. Let's learn about the special and interesting activities of the people on this important festival in the most populous country in the world.

Get together

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a holiday for reunion. This is a rare occasion of the year when all family members come back home and get together. No matter what they are doing and how far away they are, they try to go back home to meet their family and relatives and, most importantly, have a reunion dinner.

After the meal, the family members will sit together to enjoy the moon (watching the moon) and eat lovely moon cakes under the sparkling lanterns.

Watch the moon

赏月

Since ancient times, the Chinese have had a tradition of watching the moon on the mid-autumn night. Historical records from the Zhou dynasty showed that people often watch the full and brightest moon of the year to welcome winter. People put a lot of moon cakes, watermelon, apples and grapes on the ceremony table.

Today, on the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival, most Chinese people will go to the street together to admire the special beauty of the full moon night. They consider the highest and fullest moon moment to be a very sacred moment, expressing the fullness and beauty of heaven and earth, so it cannot be missed.

Eat mooncakes

One of the traditions to welcome the Mid-Autumn Festival in China that is still popular today is eating mooncakes. Initially, the mooncakes were considered as sacrifices to the moon god, but later people eat them on Mid-Autumn night with their family and watch the moon because these actions symbolize reunion. Increasingly, the mooncakes of the Chinese people became more diverse and unique with all kinds of delicious flavors, demonstrating the characteristics of Chinese cuisine.

Among many types of mooncakes, the most prominent is the round moon cake with beautiful patterns to signify fullness. Skilled bakers carefully combine the fillings of the cakes, as well as the crust, and make delicate and elegant Mid-Autumn dishes that are not only loved by local people but also many tourists from far away traveling to China right on this special occasion.

Mooncakes in China have a moderately thin crust, with green beans, lotus seeds, salted eggs, as well as many other ingredients as fillings inside. Not only has the delicious and rich cake filling, but the crust is also printed into many eye-catching shapes.

Pray under the moon

This is a tradition since ancient times. This activity stems from a story that took place in the Qi country. Legend has it that once there was a girl with an ugly face, and she always respectfully prayed to the moon god. When she became an adult, she was recruited into the palace, but did not receive the king's attention. One full moon night in August, the king met her while walking under the most beautiful moonlight of the year and felt her beauty. She became the Queen after that. Since then, the girls started the tradition of worshiping the moon on the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Release the lanterns

On the night of the 15th of August of the lunar calendar, Chinese people release lanterns on the river into the sky to wish for good luck and happiness for their family and friends.

Dropping lanterns into the river is a Chinese custom to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival that is especially important for girls and children. Accordingly, they will use oil paper to make lanterns of different shapes such as lotus flowers, boats... and then light them with a candle, drop them into rivers or lakes or let them fly up. Before releasing the lanterns, everyone sincerely prayed, hoping that the lanterns would bring their wishes to the gods, and their wishes will come true.
