In Chinese cities, a bowl of beef noodles usually costs 20 yuan (around three US dollars) to 30 yuan, seldom exceeding 50. However, the prices for the noodles at airports can be as high as 125 yuan, not to mention they are usually less delicious than the offerings at regular restaurants. Similarly, a bottle of mineral water at the Beijing Capital International Airport goes for 10 yuan, about three times the price of those sold in the downtown area.

While flying has become a popular travel option, eating and drinking at airport terminals are far from affordable for many people.

Why are the food and beverages so expensive at airports?

Businesses at airports have higher operation costs than their regular counterparts, and the differences are usually transferred to their customers. Airport restaurants usually are small with limited inventory space, so they need warehouses and deliveries from outside the airports. The deliveries have to avoid rush hours and be made in small containers, as the items are required to go through security screening. Besides, as the delivery trucks are not allowed to park near the terminal buildings for safety reasons, more workers are demanded to carry the commodities into the airport stores. Employees have to be badged by airports and pass through security checks. All that adds time and costs.

Higher rent is a contributing factor as well. Yonghe King, a popular chain restaurant in China, has said rent accounts for 30% of the total cost for their airport locations, while it accounts only up to 20% for restaurants inside the city. Dai Jie from the managing department of the Nanjing Lukou International Airport in east China's Jiangsu Province says rental fees have become one of the biggest financial challenges for airport restaurants.

What measures can be taken against high catering prices?

Hosting more stores creates stiffer competition, which can make prices more reasonable. That has been the solution adopted by many airports, which have introduced chains like McDonald's and Starbucks. But the bigger chains have more freedom to price their products, so their airport locations can still charge more than their stores in the city.

The Nanjing Lukou International Airport say they have signed contracts with businesses, requiring a constant supply of inexpensive food items and drinks, like one-yuan bottled water and four-yuan instant noodles. The airport has also set a limit of how much more stores can charge compared to their counterparts located within city limits. China's consumer goods pricing authorities have set such a limit at 30%, while the Lukou airport has lowed it to 20%. As commodity prices inevitably vary, customers usually can judge the reasonableness of a price based on their common sense, and they can file complaints to airport authorities if they encounter unusually high prices.
