Dr．Max Luscher studied color．He believed that color influences our behavior．He worked during the early part of the twentieth century，and his work is still used in advertising and design．

Certain colours causes an emotional reaction in people．Dr．Luscher asked thousands of people about their reactions．He invented a test using eight colors—yellow，red，green，dark blue，grey，violet，brown，and black．Looking at the colours people chose，he worked out their emotional state．You can find his tests on the Internet，and see if they work for you．

Dr．Luscher said，for example，that bright yellow means sunshine—a new day and a bright start．Green is the color of grass and trees．It means growth．Yellow and green show a positive state．Red is the color of blood，hunting，and war．It can be exciting，or it can mean anger．Dark blue，grey，and black are night colors．They could mean fear，or secret things．If you choose black or grey as your favorite color，you may not be feeling happy．

Scientists did a test using unusual colors in food．They gave people blue rice，violet potatoes，and black apple juice．Most people said the food tasted bad！But if they could not see the food，it tasted all right．So the color of our food influences our feelings about it．

Food packaging design uses this information about colors．Sales managers said that sugar in green boxes did not sell．In blue ones，it did！Green seemed to mean“unripe”to people，but blue means“sweet”．Look at the packaging in your food store．Is the sugar in a blue packet？A well-known drink is sold in blue cans．The designers believe it means“sweet”．There even companies that choose the best color to sell your product．
