Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

五问：

（1）大学的主要作用是什么？大学与高中、初中以及小学在教育目标上有何不同？这些不同之处是否会影响你对原论题的判断？如果大学之前的阶段注重知识的积累和全面发展，大学则注重专业技能的培养，那么在大学期间应当潜心于自己的研究领域；如果上大学之前接受的是通才教育，学生接受的教育都一样，那么大学教育应当注重学生多方面的发展。

（2）每一个学生都应该如此吗？教育过程中是否应当针对学生的特点而设置不同的学习目标？是否应该给学生自主选择所学专业外课程的权利？所有的大学的教学目标都是一致的吗？是否也有侧重的方向，也有不太相同的目标？

（3）专业外的知识与专业内的知识一定是相互独立的吗？如果不是，各学科之间的交叉将会如何影响本专业的学习？

（4）学习专业外的课程有什么好处和坏处？好处是可以开阔眼界、减缓压力，开发兴趣、锻炼多方面的能力；坏处是可能会分散精力、顾此失彼。只钻研本专业内的课程有什么具体的好处和坏处？好处是可以使学生在专业课程上潜心研究，对学科知识掌握得更加扎实，并在此基础上进行创新；坏处是可能难以适应当今社会对复合型人才的要求。

（5）你能否思考一下：一个社会更需要专才还是更需要通才？尽管没有统一的答案，但这个思考过程影响你的论断了吗？

我经常听到有人说：“将注意力只放在一个领域上的人再也不能满足社会的需求了。 ”对我来说，这一说法既荒谬又没有依据。虽然牛顿不是戏剧方面的大师，莎士比亚也不是物理学方面的专家，但是没有人会否定他们在自己领域的伟大。在我看来，专才应该先于通才，也就是说，在有限的时间内，人们首先应该尽力精通一个领域的知识，然后再扩展该领域外的知识。因此，学习本专业外的课程不应该是一所大学对学生的要求，而应该基于学生自己的兴趣和自由意愿。否则，很多学生可能在与各种课程斗争的过程中最后成为“万事皆通却无一精通的人”。

Frequently, I've heard people say that “those who only focus their attention on one field can no longer meet the needs of the society”. Such a claim, to me, is both absurd and groundless. While Newton is not a master in theater, Shakespeare is not an expert in physics either, yet no one can deny their greatness in their own fields. In my mind, specialists should go before generalists; in other words, within a limited time span, people should first try to excel in one field and then to expand their knowledge outside that field. Accordingly, learning various courses outside their fields should not be a university requirement, but should be based on students' own interests and free will. Otherwise, many students may just turn out to be “jack of all trades and master of none” in their fight with different courses.
