"Were you engaged to the gentleman at this time?"
"你这时候和那位先生订婚了没有？"
"Oh, yes, Mr. Holmes. We were engaged after the first walk that we took.
"啊，是订了婚的，福尔摩斯先生。我们在第一次散步后就订了婚。
Hosmer--Mr. Angel--was a cashier in an office in Leadenhall Street–and– –"
霍斯默·安吉尔先生是莱登霍尔街一家办公室的出纳员，而且..."
"What office?" "That's the worst of it, Mr. Holmes, I don't know."
"什么办公室？""福尔摩斯先生，最大的毛病就出在这里，我不知道。"
"Where did he live, then?" "He slept on the premises."
"那么，他住在哪里呢？""就住在办公室。"
"And you don't know his address?"
"你竟不知道他的地址？"
"No–except that it was Leadenhall Street."
"不知道。只知道莱登霍尔街。"
"Where did you address your letters, then?"
"那么，你的信寄到哪里呢？"
"To the Leadenhall Street Post-Office, to be left till called for.
"寄到莱登霍尔街邮局，留待本人领取。
He said that if they were sent to the office he would be chaffed by all the other clerks about having letters from a lady,
他说，如果寄到办公室去，其他办事员都会嘲笑他和女人通信。
so I offered to typewrite them, like he did his, but he wouldn't have that,
因此，我提出用打字机把信打出来，像他所做的那样，但是他又不肯，
for he said that when I wrote them they seemed to come from me,
因为他说，我亲笔写的信就象同我直接往来，
but when they were typewritten he always felt that the machine had come between us.
而打字的信，总觉着我们俩中间隔着一部机器似的。
That will just show you how fond he was of me, Mr. Holmes, and the little things that he would think of."

"It was most suggestive," said Holmes.

"It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important.
