词组讲解

1. give it to sb. straight / give it to sb. ** 对某人直言;责骂某人

解 〈口〉习语;词义溯源:将[它(it)][直接地、坦率地(straight)]告诉某人

例 I think it would be better to just give it to Bob straight. If we try to conceal anything, he'll find out what the truth is later and then he'll never trust us again.

2. give one an inch, and one will take a mile / if you give one an inch, one will take a mile ** 得寸进尺,贪得无厌

解 习语;词义溯源:给了[一寸(an inch)]还想要;表示在某方面已经得到一小部分的人,就会希望得到更多

例 Girls, you have to be careful when you're out on a date. If you don't know the boy well, make sure you go only to public places with him. Remember this rule: Give him an inch, and he will take a mile!

3. give one one's walking papers ** 解雇

解 〈口〉习语;词义溯源:给某人[解雇通知(walking papers)];参照give sb. the sack

例 The two employees of Alert Security Service who were on duty at the Royal Museum on the night of the burglary were given their walking papers. Electronic records show that the two ignored an alarm for over 15 minutes before going to check it out.

4. give one's right arm for sb. or sth. / give one's right arm ** 乐意献出极为贵重的东西,不惜任何代价

例 I'd give my right arm to have that bike again. I never should have sold it. Without it, I can't go anywhere conveniently.

5. give oneself airs ** 摆架子,装腔作势,耀武扬威

例 I don't bother to attend my high school class reunion anymore. I used to, but I got tired of seeing all my old classmates giving themselves airs as though they were important or wealthy or something.
