词组讲解

1. give credit where credit is due ** 称赞(感谢)值得称赞(感谢)的人

解 习语;词义溯源:将[信誉(credit)]给予[应有的、合适的(due)]某人或某物

例 I have to admit, you're a success. I never expected it. When we were students, I always thought I'd be the one to be successful and you'd be a factory laborer or something like that. So let me give credit where credit is due: you've done much better than me.

2. give free rein to sb. / give sb. free rein ** 放任某人,对某人不加约束

解 习语;词义溯源:给予某人[行动的无限自由(free rein)];参照get a free hand with sth.

例 We're giving you free rein. You decide where to open the franchise stores and we'll supply you with the funding. We only ask that you let us decide the timing of each opening.

3. give ground ** 退却,让步

解 习语;词义溯源:将[土地、地盘(ground)]移交(转手)

例 If we were to give a little ground on the price of the machines, would you be willing to return the favor by giving us 45 days to deliver instead of 30 days?

4. give in to sb. or sth. / give in *** 屈服,投降;同意;呈交

解 短语动词;词义溯源:给予某人或某物[里面的(in)]部分

例 At the age of 18, he was offered a three-year, ¥1. 2 million contract by the National Team. In a wise move, he refused to give in to the attractive offer, enrolling in Peking University instead and postponing his professional baseball career until after he had completed his education.

5. give it 〔her〕 the gun ** 加速,加大油门

解 〈口〉习语;词义溯源:给它(她)[信号枪(gun)]

例 Two cars came speeding around the corner, both giving it the gun. Seconds later, a blue-and-white police car swung around the corner in hot pursuit. It was just like in a Hollywood movie.
