On Friday the latest app from Nintendo, Pokémon Go, rose to the top of the free app download charts in the US and Australia within 24 hours of launch. In the game, players interact with their real-life surroundings, finding, capturing and training monsters from the Pokémon franchise (such as a Krabby).

Better yet for earnings, the game also led the chart for top grossing apps in the US; although free to download, players can buy items in-game. Macquarie estimates that holding the top spot for a year would add one-tenth to net profit forecasts for the financial year ending in March 2017.

As with Nintendo’s first smartphone app, Miitomo , Pokémon Go is a reminder of the gamemaker’s ability to attract the consumer. Still, it has to keep them; Miitomo’s popularity has faded since the initial excitement.

Meanwhile, Pokémon Go has proven so popular that there is insufficient server capacity to accommodate the demand: player complaints about server crashes litter the internet. Preparations will have to be better should the company finally launch smartphone games based on Super Mario or Donkey Kong — for which many fans have been waiting.

There is clearly much potential to enhance earnings by monetising more popular characters. Still, currency movements may curb some optimism for this overseas earner. Nintendo’s guidance for a doubling in earnings per share in the coming year is based on a yen averaging 105 per dollar. The reality could be worse. A similar profit estimate from Nomura is based on a yen rate of 108; strengthening that to 101 cuts earnings by nearly one-third.

After rising one-tenth on Friday, Nintendo’s stock is up nearly two-fifths against a falling Topix benchmark. To justify further outperformance, Pokémon Go will need to hold its spot. And, when they finally come to mobile, Nintendo’s best loved characters will have to work that little bit harder.
