"Our time is short," one faint voice said;
“我们的时间不多了，”一个微弱的声音说；
Today we've done our best on different sides: what matters now?
我们今天尽了全力，为了各自一方，现在这些还有什么意义？
Tomorrow we shall rest!
明天我们就将休息了！
Life lies behind. I might not care for only my own sake;
生命已逝，我在乎的不是我自己的生命；
But far away are other hearts,
可是远方的亲人啊，
That this day's work will break.
今天会让他们心碎。
Among New Hampshire's snowy hills,
新罕布什尔雪山村庄里，
There pray for me tonigh，t a woman, and a little girl with hair like golden light;
今晚有人会为我祷告，一个女人，和一个小女孩都长着金发。
And at the thought, broke forth, at last, the cry of anguish wild,
想到这些，终于忍不住，失声痛哭起来，
That would not longer be repressed, O God, my wife, my child!

"And," said the other dying man,

Across the Georgia plain,

There watch and wait for me loved one, I never shall see again:

A little girl, with dark, bright eyes,
一个小女孩，眼睛又黑又亮，
Each day waits at the door;
每天在门边等待听到；
Her father's step, her father's kiss,
爸爸的脚步，得到爸爸的亲吻，
Will never greet her more.
她再也得不到这些了。
Today we sought each other's lives:
今天我们都要了对方的生命，
Death levels all that now;
死亡把一切抹平了；
For soon before God's mercy seat together we shall bow.

Forgive each other while we may;
趁活着我们原谅彼此吧；
Life's but a weary game,

And, right or wrong, the morning sun will find us, dead, the same.

The dying lips the pardon breathe;

On Hampshire's hills, and Georgia's plain,
