Chapter 26
Inside the door lab, Dean Hardscrabble had just pressed her finger on the power button and shut the door down. Don saw the light above the door go out and shouted, “They’re still in there!”
“Until the CDA arrives, this door stays off,” Hardscrabble ordered.
The Oozmas knew it was a death sentence for Mike and Sulley. Squishy frantically made a dash for the door, but the guards easily took him down. “Enough!” Dean Hardscrabble shouted. “I want this room cleared, now!”
Meanwhile, in the human world, Mike and Sulley were in a panic. They could hear the humans outside the cabin, coming closer and closer.
“We gotta get outta here!” Sulley whispered desperately. He headed toward a window.
“No!” Mike said. “Let them come.”
Sulley already had one foot out the window when he realized Mike wasn’t following him. “If we scare them,” Mike explained, “I mean really scare them, we could generate enough scream to power the door from this side.”
“What are you talking about?” Sulley asked.
“I’ve read every book about scaring ever written,” Mike said. “This could work!”
Sulley fought to keep from screaming. “They’re ADULTS! I can’t do this!”
“Yes, you can,” Mike replied. “Just follow my lead.”
Sulley pulled his big foot back into the room and listened to Mike’s plan.
Moments later, the doorknob turned. The camp rangers entered the dark, empty cabin and aimed their f lashlights in every direction. For a moment, there was silence. Then a fan in the corner turned on by itself. The humans jumped in surprise ... and the fan slowly stopped. A curtain at the side of the room rustled, and a window shutter clattered open and shut.
Up in the rafters, Mike and Sulley gave each other a thumbs-up. A moment later, the rangers turned and saw a strange, small dark form whisk through the shadows. A record started playing backward. The rangers were becoming unnerved by the eerie music when they heard the sound of claws tearing through wood. They shined their f lashlights on the walls and found them covered with deep claw marks.
Sulley was smiling and blowing the sawdust of f his big hands. He waited for his cue from Mike and then placed a windupdoll on the f loor.
“Ma-ma. Ma-ma,” the doll said creepily. It walked into a bedpost and toppled over.
“Now to Phase Two,” Mike whispered. Sulley nodded and pushed one of the bunk beds. It hit another bed, and then another, until the entire row of beds fell like dominoes, crashing to the f loor. The rangers began screaming wildly.
Back inside the door tech lab, Dean Hardscrabble saw the red light over the door f licker. She stared at it, baf f led.
The terrified rangers ran for the cabin door, but the beds were blocking the exit. Mike nodded at Sulley, who jumped down from the rafters. His huge blue body loomed over the rangers as he let out the meanest, lowest growl he could muster. The roar hit the rangers with the force of an oncoming train. The trapped rangers screamed! Mike could see the closet door begin to glow bright red.
Dean Hardscrabble stared at the door in disbelief. “Impossible!” she gasped as she shielded her eyes from the blindingly bright red light. Then the scream can at the door filled to the top. She spun around at the sound of scream cans filling and rattling on the shelves.
Dean Hardscrabble covered her face as the cans began shooting off the shelf in every direction. She stared, dumbstruck, as the door exploded and Mike and Sulley burst in amid a cloud of smoke and debris. Sulley rubbed his eyes and stepped over the broken door.
“How ... how did you do this?” Hardscrabble demanded to know as Mike picked up his battered MU cap from the rubble.
Sulley shrugged and looked down at Mike. “Don’t ask me,” he told the dean.
Mike looked up at Dean Hardscrabble’s stunned expression. For once, he felt speechless.
