come out of the closet(出柜)英语说法典故

“出柜”是英文“come out of the closet”的直译。指Female to Male (FTM) 或者Male to Female (MTF)向周围的人公开自己的性别认同与生理性别和社会性别不一致的状况。“出柜”就是让自己的性取向示与人的状况，站出来，承认是同性恋。

关于这个英语典故的出处说法不一，但有两种广为认同的说法。

一说此语产生于英国。1832年以前，英国法律禁止医生解剖尸体作科学研究，除非是死囚的尸体。剖尸合法化以后，许多医生开始购买死尸用于研究，由于放在房间内有碍观瞻，只好将之放在衣柜内等隐蔽处。时间一长，人们便疑心医生的衣柜中有骷髅。由此，该语转义指“不可告人的隐情”。

另一说法是，传说有人要寻找一个无忧无虑真正幸福的人，经过多方寻找，终于找到了，而这位被认为无忧无虑的妇女却打开衣柜，让人们看里面的一具骷髅。原来，这是她情人的尸骨。此人多年前在和她丈夫的决斗中丧生，直到现在，她丈夫每晚都要逼她吻这具骷髅，她非常痛苦，并不幸福。在这个故事中，这个短语喻指“隐情”。

而come out of the closet在20世纪70年代的美国是一句口号似的短语。结合skeleton in the closet这个短语，“走出衣柜”这个短语是公开自己真正的样子。在美国，1970年自从同性恋解放运动兴起后，运动者(如美国70年代著名的同性恋权益运动代表Harvey Milk)鼓励人们勇敢地站出来，参与请愿、争权利、争平等，于是呼吁大家come out of the closet，后来更简单的come out也可以代表这个意思。随着多年来同性恋权益运动人士和传统宗教力量的多次对抗之后，越来越多的同志纷纷come out，还有越来越多的普通大众都加入到为同性恋争取各种平等权利的队列中，近年来在美国取得了很多的成就，比如废除了在克林顿时代就残存在军队中对于同性恋的“不问不说”政策，以及2011年7月，美国纽约州通过的同性婚姻法案等。
