Christina: Colter Stevens, 17th Airborne helicopter pilot, was on the first site I tried. His father's name is Donald, right? This is from last week. "Donald Stevens will join host Eleonor Gwah to discuss the death of his son, Army Captain Colter Stevens who died in Afghanistan in February and was honored posthumously with the silver star. Captain Stevens: I see a card.

Goodwin: That's good.

Soldier: Do you copy, we're taking a lot of RPG fire here.

Captain Stevens: Am I dead? A radio listing is saying that I died in a helicopter crash in country, and my father received a medal for me.

Goodwin: Your condition is not the issue here. You need to focus on preventing any subsequent attacks. Everything else is irrelevant.

Captain Stevens: News report saying that I am dead is irrelevant?

Goodwin: Until the person or persons who blew up that train are in custody... yes!

Captain Stevens: Goodwin. One soldier to another. Am I dead?

Goodwin: Part of your brain remains activated.

Captain Stevens: What about the rest of me? I can see my hands and my feet. They still move.

Goodwin: They're a manifestation. They're just your way of making sense of all this.

Captain Stevens: So...what are you saying? Are you saying that I am imagining this? I'm imagining that...I am still alive, that I am in this capsule?

(The capsule is disintegrating)

Goodwin: Captain, what just happened?

Captain Stevens: Can I ask you a question?

Goodwin: The capsule is a manifestation as well.

Captain Stevens: Where am I?

Goodwin: That's classified.

Captain Stevens: Fuck you!

Dr. Rutledge: Captain, I can not imagine what you must be feeling right now, but if we are to prevent a second attack, we need to send you back immediately. And Captain, you cannot deviate from the mission while inside the Source Code. Even to investigate your, hmm...Even to investigate what happened to you. There is only one continuum on this end and it cannot be unsettled.

Captain Stevens: Well, you know, I did unsettle it. I called you from the train. Just before the explosion, so 7:46 this morning they paged you with a call...

Dr. Rutledge: You may have made that call from the train, but I would never receive it here. It's a different reality, Captain. If the call even went through it would be received by a different me entirely. This may be difficult for you to hear, but you are a hand on a clock, understand? We set you, you move forward. We reset you, you move again. And that represents the entirety of your function here.

Captain Stevens: You know what, next time, I'll send you a pizza. I see, if that makes an impression!

Dr. Rutledge: You cannot alter the continuum of this reality from within the Source Code.

Captain Stevens: This can't be legal what you are doing.

Dr. Rutledge: In fact, your acquisition by this program as well as the program itself, has been reviewed and sanctioned by a military court. You know, many soldiers would find this preferable to death. The opportunity to continue serving their country.

Captain Stevens: Have you...Have you spent much time in battle, sir? Uh?

Dr. Rutledge: That's immaterial.

Dr. Rutledge: Fine, you can have that in return for completing this mission.

Captain Stevens: Wha... Have what?

Dr. Rutledge: Calm yourself, you're back. Did you find the bomber?

Captain Stevens: Uh...There...are hundreds of people on that train.

Dr. Rutledge: Well, then check them out one by one. Doesn't matter what you do to them, they're already dead. Get to that gun and shoot them all if you have to, but get us some usable intel.

Captain Stevens: No! No, wait!

(Captain Stevens goes through the eight minutes again)

Dr. Rutledge: We have to keep doing this, until you find the bomber.

Captain Stevens: Please, I am trying, I am trying.

Dr. Rutledge: Who is the bomber?

Captain Stevens: I am trying.

Dr. Rutledge: I am sorry, Captain. I know you are exhausted and we are all frustrated, but we can not fail. You can do this.

Captain Stevens: I can't, I can't...

Dr. Rutledge: Yes, you can. You are a born hero, son. Even your father thinks so. Saving people is what you do best.

Captain Stevens' father's voice: It was about a stir, too. I didn't wanna regroup back.

Captain Stevens: Dad...Dad?

Captain Stevens' father's voice: I just... started feeling like he didn't wanna come home anymore.

Captain Stevens: Dad?

Captain Stevens' father's voice: Somehow, he couldn't come home...and he wouldn't talk to me...wouldn't hear me. Hardly said he just...couldn't leave his unit out there without him and that was that. Those guys...were his family. I said two things I shouldn't have. I don't know. I never fully understood him. And I can't believe he is gone.

美国的兵役制度

目前，美国没有实行强制兵役制度，而是实行全志愿兵役制，这意味着现役军人完全自愿服役。通过为应征者提供各种福利，军队可以征募足够的兵力来满足其编制 需要，至少在和平时期是这样。另外，美国还保留了志愿国民警卫队和志愿预备队。这些武装力量受过良好训练，可以随时准备响应总统的命令向军队提供兵力支 援。

但是作为一个保险策略，美国政府还保持了义务兵役制度（SSS）。SSS的主要目的是在志愿兵力不能满足战争需要或应付其他国家紧急状态时向军队提 供兵力支援。换句话说，就是随时准备监管恢复的征兵（兵役）工作。该机构的第二个目的是为拒服兵役者提供可供选择的征兵时期服役计划，这里的拒服兵役者是 指那些符合征兵条件，却由于其道德信仰而拒绝参加作战的人。

在和平时期，SSS的主要任务是登记美国的潜在兵源。可能被征召入伍的群体由年龄在18和25岁之间的美国男性居民组成。根据现行法律规定，女子不在征兵范围之内，因为美国国防部禁止女兵加入地面作战部队。

有少数几类男子也可以自动免除兵役，其中包括：

1 军队中的现役男子

2 正在军事学院学习或选择大学军官学习计划的男子

3 在美国持有有效学生、访问者或外交签证的外国公民

4 某些从事农业的特定外来人员

5 医院或精神病机构中不能自由行动的病人

6 无法参加公共活动的残疾人

7 罪犯

根据法律规定，除以上几类情况外，其他所有年龄在18至25岁的美国男性公民都应在具备资格后30天内到SSS进行登记。符合这一规定的人员可以通 过电子邮件、互联网、普通邮件或高中设立的义务兵役登记处进行登记。SSS会将所有登记人员的姓名和住址备案，以便在恢复征兵后能容易地对其进行征召。大 多数美国公民在度过18岁生日之后就符合登记条件了，其他人在不再享有免役条件时也应该进行登记（例如，从军事院校毕业之日）。符合条件的外国人需要在入 境后30天内进行登记。

美国政府可以起诉那些符合条件而不去SSS进行登记的潜在征召对象。如果被宣判有罪，这些人将面临最高五年监禁和最高250,000美元罚金的处 罚。今天，美国政府已不太可能采取这样极端的行为，而是通过向违反规定的潜在征召对象限制政府福利来鼓励登记。这些福利包括联邦助学金、联邦工作培训和一 些联邦就业机会。另外，所有符合条件的外国人也必须在获得美国国籍之前进行登记。根据SSS报告，在2000年，已有88%的合格人员进行了登记。

原则上，只要年龄仍在26周岁以下，SSS就会接受延迟登记。
