Harrison: What's there to hate?

Julia: Nothing, if you're a handsome, divorced doctor. But for the rest of us single women, it's kind of a giant cosmic bitch slap. It's the universe saying, "Look, remember when you were 14, and you had cystic acne and braces, and you played the saxophone in the marching band, and no one would invite you to the winter formal? Well, nothing's changed."

Harrison: I would crawl over cut glass to take you to the winter formal. And then I would prescribe Retin-A for your skin.

Julia: That's why you're my valentine.

TV: (Kelvin says) So we have a professional here. I'm sure you've heard a lot of stories on Valentine's Day. Do you still believe in love? (Reed answers) Hell, yes. Love is the only shocking act left on the planet. (Kelvin says) Well, if he said it, folks, it must be true, because he is a florist.

Liz: You're up.

Jason: Did you get my good side?

Liz: I don't know. Roll over. Last night...

Liz: Amazing.

Liz: What?

Jason: The ring.

情人节的起源

 

 

 

前身——牧神节

关于现今所谓的情人节，其根源可以追溯至古代的希腊，当时的希腊人对潘的崇拜十分流行。潘是丰产神祗，他被描述成半人半山羊的样子，性情粗野，喜怒无常，使人想起他便心惊胆战。事实上，英文恐慌（“panic”）一词的字面意思是“潘的”（英文 “of Pan”），这样的引申可谓十分传神。

潘理应一边吹箫，一边看守畜群才对。可是，他却很容易分心。潘曾与不少仙女和女神有过许多风流韵事。一项雕刻描述潘跟女爱神阿佛洛狄忒亲近，爱神厄洛斯（Eros）则在他们上边振翅盘旋，情况就像现今情人节贺卡上所描绘的丘比特一样。

许多罗马人也崇拜一个类似的神祇，称为法乌努斯（Faunus）。他也被描述成半人半山羊的样子。在每年2月15日的牧神节，罗马人会以狂欢作乐的方式去崇拜法乌努斯。在这个节日期间，一些身披寸缕的男子会绕山而跑，手里还挥动着山羊皮鞭。任何妇女若想怀胎生子便站在跑道旁。罗马人相信，疾跑的男子若用皮鞭抽打妇人一下，她的不孕症便会不药而愈。

名字的由来

《布鲁尔的警句与寓言辞典》说：“圣华伦泰是个罗马教士，由于援助受逼害的基督徒而系身囹圄。他后来归信基督教……最后被人用棍棒打死，卒于二月十四日……。”

古代庆祝情人节的习俗与华伦泰拉上关系，其实纯属巧合而已。事实上，这个节日很可能与古罗马的牧神节或雀鸟交配的季节有关。情人节的特色是情侣互相馈赠礼物。时至今日，人们则喜欢以情人卡表意。情人卡上通常绘有邱比特、给箭射中的心等等。

关于邱比特跟情人节的关系，上述辞典说：“邱比特（拉丁文cupido，意思是欲望、爱），罗马爱神，相当于希腊爱神厄洛斯。他通常由一个可爱的小男孩所代表，背部长有两只翅膀，眼睛给布蒙住，手持弓箭。”

《世界书籍百科全书》提供进一步资料表明关于情人节的起源，其实众说纷纭。该百科全书指出：“据说在公元200年期间，罗马皇帝克劳狄二世禁止年轻男子结婚。他认为未婚男子可以成为更优良的士兵。一位名叫华伦泰的教士违反了皇帝的命令，秘密为年轻男子主持婚礼。……传闻说华伦泰于公元269年2月14日被处决。据《天主教百科全书》指出，公元496年，教宗圣基拉西乌斯一世在公元第五世纪末叶废除了牧神节，把2月14日定为圣华伦泰日。”

14世纪以后，人们就开始纪念这个日子。现在，中文译为“情人节”的这个日子，在英语里被称为Valentine's Day，用以纪念他。
