Man: The whole truth, nothing but the truth, so help you God?

Scarlet: I do.

Judge: You request a divorce by the state of California citing irreconcilable differences. This correct?

Scarlet: Yes, Your Honor.

Judge: Is Michael O'Donnell present?

Lawyer: No, Your Honor.

Judge: I take his absence as agreement to the orders of the divorce. Let's proceed. You are not requesting sole custody?

Scarlet: No, Your Honor.

Ned: You can't handle the truth!

Judge: What?

Ned: I'm sorry, I panicked. It was the first thing that came into my mind. Your Majesty.

Judge: Who are you?

Scarlet: That's my husband's best friend.

Judge: You a lawyer, best friend?

Ned: Yes.

Scarlet: No.

Ned: I believe the law degree in my pocket says so. Yes, and it's a little bit smeared because I sat on it in the car, not because I printed it out recently.

Judge: Let's pretend that's real. You want to explain what you're doing here?

Ned: We...are stopping a gross...miscarriage of justice! That...

Mike: Okay, if you'd just let me explain. I can explain this. If you would just listen...I've got a letter from Mike O'Donnell, he's the husband in this case!

Judge: I'm sorry. We're in the middle...

Scarlet: Your Honor, if it's okay, I'd like to hear the letter, please.

Mike: Thank you, Your Honor. This is a letter from Mike O'Donnell. He wanted me to read it. "Scarlet, before you go through with this, I want to remind you of September 7th, 1988. It was the first time that I saw you. You were reading Less Than Zero. You were wearing a Guns N' Roses T-shirt. I'd never seen anything so perfect. I remember thinking that I had to have you, or I'd die. Then you whispered that you loved me at the homecoming dance. And I felt so peaceful and safe. Because I knew that no matter what happened from that day on, nothing could ever be that bad. Because I had you. And then I grew up and I lost my way. And I blamed you for my failures. And I know that you think you have to do this today. I don't want you to. But I guess if I love you, I should let you move on."

Judge: All right, son, you need to go now. Let's proceed.

Scarlet: I'm sorry, Your Honor. Would it be okay if we postpone this for now for just a little while? Would that be okay?

1. If it's any consolation: 如果这能给你带来安慰的话。consolation有“安慰，慰问”的意思。例如：a letter of consolation（慰问信）。

2. move on: 继续前进。move on也可以表示“更换工作（或话题等）”。例如：I think we've talked enough about that subject; let's move on.（关于那个问题我认为我们已经谈得够多了，让我们改谈别的吧。）

3. buzzkill: 扫兴的人，泼冷水的人。

4. commute: <口>上下班路程。例如：an hour's commute from the university（从大学来的一小时乘车路程）。

5. irreconcilable: 不能调和的；无法化解的。

6. smeared: 弄脏的；污迹斑斑的。smear作为动词可以表示“弄脏，弄污”，也可以表示“把……擦模糊”。看一下例子：a face smeared with dirt（一张弄脏了的脸）；Several words were smeared.（有几个字给弄得模糊不清了。）

7. miscarriage of justice: 审判不公，误判。

8. go through with: 做完，完成。看一下例子：I can't go through with this performance, I'm so nervous.（我无法完成这场表演，我好紧张。）

世界各地奇异的离婚习俗

 

 

阿富汗

如果女方提出离婚，那么她再嫁人时，她的再婚丈夫要付给前夫两倍当年婚礼费用；如果是男方提出离婚，女方重新嫁人时，新郎丈夫则要如数偿还前夫与妻子当年的婚礼费用。

厄瓜多尔

夫妻反目离婚，皆要绝食三天。到第四天早晨，接受一位年长者“检验”是否真的有气无力，如果真的，分手也是真的；如果是假的，这位年长者会下令：永远不准离。

多哥

男女双方感情破裂，便到当地部门申请，并各自请管理人员将头发剃去一半，将剃下来的头发互相交换。

日本

如果丈夫认为妻子睡觉姿势不好看，就可以提出离婚申请。

黎巴嫩

在传统的家庭中，女人出门前先要征得丈夫的同意。如果有朝一日不想要妻子，待妻子出门前征求他的意见时，他只需说“快去，别回家了”，便由此宣告离婚。

英国

夫妻双方只有一方可以提出离婚，如果双方都提出离婚，则不准离婚。

意大利
