Ghost Writer: No.

Lang: Do you have something to tell me?

Ghost Writer: I went to see Emmett.

Lang: That windbag! Why?

Ghost Writer: I know about you and Emmett.

Lang: Me and Emmett?

Ghost Writer: l know that he was your.. .

Lang: My?

Ghost Writer: Handler, if that's what they're called.

Lang: My handler?

Ghost Writer: Yeah, that he was your handler in the ClA.

Lang: Oh, my God. You're serious, aren't you? 

Ghost Writer: When McAra found this, he went to Boston to show it to Emmett, and he died on the way home, and l think he was murdered.

Lang: I think you've had a few too many of those already.

Ghost Writer: It was McAra who believed that Emmett told you to go into politics in the first place.

Lang: Emmett? I barely knew the man.

Ghost Writer: And that story of yours about why you joined the party and Ruth and the canvassing, well, the dates don't fit.

Lang: I got the dates wrong. Big deal!

Ghost Writer: Then when he found this photograph, and he heard the rumors about Emmett being in the ClA.. .

Lang: Rumors?

Ghost Writer: It's on the lnternet.

Lang: I've never heard such utter balls in my entire life. Mike would never have believed such crap. He was too clever. Too loyal.

Ghost Writer: Mike betrayed you to Rycart.

Lang: How do you know that?

Ghost Writer: He told me.

Lang: Rycart? He's lying.

Ghost Writer: This phone number on the back of the photograph, it's Rycart's. The handwriting, that's McAra's.

Lang: Mike. Mike, Mike.

Ghost Writer: And you knew he was disillusioned. You had a big row with him just before he died.

Lang: Yes, I know, but he never mentioned this. This is just.. . This is grotesque. I've never taken orders from anyone. Whatever I did, I did because I believed it was right.

Ghost Writer:  What, even supporting illegal kidnapping for torture?

Lang: Oh, for God's sake, spare me the bleeding-heart bullshit! Do you know what I'd do if I was in power again? I'd have two queues at airports. One for flights where we'd done no background checks, infringed on no one's civil bloody liberties, used no intelligence gained by torture. And on the other flight, we'd do everything we possibly could to make it perfectly safe. And then we'd see which plane the Rycarts of this world would put their bloody kids on! And you can put that in the book!

Protestors:: Go home! Go home! Here comes the killer! Prosecute for torture!

Reporter: Mr. Lang! Mr. Lang, will you live in America? Mr. Lang, will you take American citizenship?

Lang: When we get back to the house, we need to have a meeting.

Ruth: Oh, my God! -

Bodyguard: Murderer! Firing from the roof!

1. full of energy: 精神抖擞，充满活力。

2. windbag：夸夸其谈的人；空话连篇的人；话匣子。这里亚当•朗是说艾米特教授是个“大话王”。

3. handler: 组织者，顾问，这里是说艾米特教授是亚当•朗的“操控人”，左右了他的政策制定，使英国做出有利于美国的决策。

4. canvass: 逐户游说拉选票，或调查民意，征求意见。也可以表示彻底检查、细究。　

“逐户游说（canvass)”，指由义工敲开居民的门，游说他们投票给自己的候选人。这是“选区活动”的主要形式之一，甚至可以称得上是草根政治的核心内容。来看下面的例句：

He thanked all his helpers who canvassed for him and helped him to win this election.（他感谢所有为他竞选游说，并且帮他赢得这次竞选胜利的人们。）

5.big deal: 没什么大不了；无所谓；没关系，也常说成是no big deal。

6. utter balls: 一派胡言。Balls指“胡说，废话”，是一种比较粗俗的说法。

7. crap: 废话。

8. have a big row with someone: 和某人大吵一架，发生严重分歧。

9. grotesque: 荒唐的；荒谬的。

例如：It's grotesque to expect a person of her experience to work for such little money.（想让她那样有经验的人为这点钱工作真是可笑。）

        影片中，英国前首相亚当·朗遭到暗杀身亡。提到领导人被暗杀，你是不是马上想到了里根、肯尼迪？在美国历史上，总统被暗杀可谓屡见不鲜。

美国历史上被暗杀的总统

在美国历史上，谋杀总统的事件屡见不鲜，一共有9位总统遭不测，其中遇刺身亡的有4位，幸免于难的有5位，成为谋刺总统最多的国家。而且，暗杀总统事件都被蒙上了一层神秘的色彩。据美国报刊报道，这些谋刺案件都没有彻底查清，这也是美国政治生活中的特殊现象。

1835年1月30日，美国第七任总统安德鲁·杰克逊在华盛顿国会山的圆形大厅准备参加一个葬礼时,一个名叫理查德·劳伦斯的精神失常的油漆匠（他自称是英国王位的合法继承人）,在距杰克逊不过6英尺的地方，用两把手枪射击总统，但两枪都未打中，杰克逊丝毫未受伤。安德鲁·杰克逊是美国历史上第一位遇刺的总统。

美国第16任总统亚伯拉罕·林肯是美国第一位遇刺身亡的总统。林肯被美国人称为“最佳总统”。1862年，林肯总统发表《解放黑人奴隶宣言》，他坚决主张废除奴隶制，并领导联邦政府和军队击败了南方种植园主的武装叛乱。这场战争即著名的“美国南北战争”。林肯支持全美国永远废除奴隶制的言论和行为受到了美国人民尤其是黑人的拥戴，却遭到南方奴隶制维护者的极大憎恨。1864年林肯在总统连任竞选中获胜。1865年4月14日，林肯参加为庆祝南北战争胜利的活动去福特剧院看戏时，演员威尔克斯·布恩在包厢后射击，击中林肯头部。布恩受伤逃到弗吉尼亚一座燃烧的谷仓中，被联邦军队拖出，重伤致死，同谋的三男一女被处决。林肯于次日凌晨死去。

第二名死于枪下的总统是詹姆斯·艾布拉姆·加菲尔德，他是共和党提名大会上的折衷人选，在党内派别相互妥协的情况下于1880年当选总统。加尔菲德一直成为共和党内两派的争夺者，而他本人也态度暧昧。由于对官职分配不均，1881年7月2日，加菲尔德在华盛顿一个火车站上被共和党顽固派分子查尔斯·吉托开枪吉中，9月19日，加菲尔德不治身亡。吉托于次年被处绞刑。

1901年9月6日，年轻的无政府主义者利昂·乔尔戈什趁威廉·麦金莱总统于纽约布法罗举行的泛美 博览会上与人握手之际，开枪击中总统。8天后麦金莱总统身亡。虽然总统在被抬上救护车前还断断续续他说“不要伤害他”，但凶手还是于当年12月被电刑处死。

1933年2月15日，富兰克林·罗斯福总统在迈阿密发表演说，凶手赞加拉连发5枪，但均未击中总统。

1950年11月1日，两个波多黎各人企图冲进哈里·杜鲁门总统当时居住的布莱尔饭店行刺，一名刺客被警卫当场打死，总统安然无恙。

第35位总统约翰·肯尼迪是美国寿命最短的总统。1963年11月22日，肯尼迪的车队通过达拉斯市区，被狙击者开枪打中。凶手是谁以及暗杀细节至今说法不一。他的假定刺客两夭后在监狱中被杀。肯尼迪之死成为历史上的一个谜。

1975年9月5日和22日，福特总统竞选连任期间，在加州的萨克拉门托和旧金山先后被两名妇女用枪行刺，均未遂。从此福特穿上防弹背心继续竞选旅行。

1981年3月30日，罗纳德·里根在华盛顿希尔顿饭店门前发表演说时，被一名白人青年欣克利开枪射中左胸，欣克利在接受审判时被医生诊断患有精神分裂症，后被免罪送入精神病院，半年后出院。据说欣克利向好莱坞女影星朱迪·福斯特求爱不成，从电影中受到启发而行刺总统，里根被抢救治愈。
