1. exertion: 努力，费力

She failed to unlock the safe in spite of all her exertions.（她虽然费尽力气，仍未能将那保险箱的锁打开。 ）

2. manservant: 男仆，仆役女仆则是maidservant

3.foreman: 领班，工头

foreman也可以指陪审团主席

The foreman stated that the jury found the defendant not guilty.（陪审团主席宣布说陪审团认定被告无罪。）

4. in any way: 以任何方式，无论如何
