drop the ball这个表达起源于20世纪40年代的球类比赛。在比赛中，如果有人失手让球掉在了地上，比赛就会终止，直到球被重新捡起（也有说法是如果没接到球，球手就会被判失分）。引申为犯错误；掉链子。
