in the air

说到 in the air ，那就是飞机在天上飞。

例：

There is a plane in the air.

clear the air

clear是“清除”，air是“空气”，连起来to clear the air则引申为清除两人间不愉快的气氛，其实就是“打消疑惑、消除隔阂”的意思。

例：

Let's discuss this frankly. It'll be better if we clear the air.

我们还是开诚布公的谈一谈吧。最好把事情都说明白了。

pie in the sky

pie in the sky这个俗语最早源于一首歌。1911年，歌曲“The rebel girl and the preacher and the slave”开始被大家广为传唱，这首歌意在讽刺当时的“救世军”国际基督教组织。

“救世军”提倡尘世受苦，认为只有这样才能进入天堂。所以，创作人就在歌中写道：牧师们每天晚上都要出门传教，告诉你什么是对什么是错，但你若问是否有吃的，他们就会用甜蜜的声音回答：等到你进入天国，一定会有吃的 You'll get pie in the sky when you die(等你死后你就会在天上得到馅饼);现在要工作、要祈祷。

所以pie in the sky渐渐被人们所接受，用来形容“空头支票”、“虚幻不能实现的空想”。

例：

His dream to become president is just a pie in the sky.

成为总统是他的黄粱美梦。

I don't believe the plan will succeed, it is just pie in the sky.

我不相信这个计划能成功，它根本无法实现。

Up in the air

悬在半空中，大家可想而知，这个口语表达就是“悬而未决，尚未确定”的意思，相当于：undecided，uncertain。

If a matter is up in the air, it is uncertain, often because other matters have to be decided first.

悬而未决

例：

The whole future of the project is still up in the air.

这个项目前途未卜。
